October 14-18, 2019 the IEA, NYSCA Visual Arts, Artist in Residence was Gali Greenspan. Gali lives in Alfred and moved to Alfred from Israel and we are excited to have such an excellent artist in our community. During the week Gali generated an impressive range of projects. IEA research associate Rebekkah Palov demonstrated photoshop editing techniques to Gali during the week, which were then used in the production of images. Projects included unedited photo-collage images digitally printed on watercolor paper, a number of large format prints on polypropylene-based banner-media, prints on 44-inch cotton paper and an edition printed on Xuan paper. Gali also made a number of prints on the wide-format dye-sublimation transfer printer, which she then used for initial tests transferring the images onto carpet. She also will transfer the dye-sublimation transfer prints onto prepared roll metal construction flashing.
Gali Greenspan Born in Jerusalem 1979, is a multi-disciplinary artist recently moved from Tel-Aviv to Alfred NY. Lives together with her spouse and their three children. Greenspan’s work stems from a strong sculptural foundation, beginning with a deep interest in craft objects, and has expanded into creating installations and space-oriented video works. Over the past four years, Greenspan’s projects have been a combination of real-life video footage, sampled sound, videos of fabricated virtual spaces and real-space installations. In the installations sculptural objects are built in close proximity to the video projection they carry and with attention to viewers movements and position. Materials appear in the installations both as a real building material and as components in the video realm. The use of materials such as PVC, Foam-board, Plywood or carpets acts as a physical stimulator and a carriers of cultural charge and common taste.
